Complete Construction Service is putting the finishing touches on Onelife Fitness, which is days away from opening to the public.

The downtown Kansas City fitness center at 1261 Main St. will open as early as Sunday if it passes Friday’s final inspection. The center is above Cosentino’s Downtown Market.

The 35,000-square-foot space has been transformed from a vacant concrete shell to a colorful space lined with state-of-the-art fitness equipment. Most of the cardio equipment features WiFi-enabled touch screens, where patrons can surf the Internet or watch Netflix or cable TV.

Another bonus for members is the “cardio cinema” room, where the latest popular movies will be shown. Front and center is a 228-inch movie screen complete with a theater-quality surround-sound system. In the future, Onelife Fitness plans to connect the room to cable TV, so those working out can watch local sports teams on game day, such as the Kansas City Chiefs.

Throughout the fitness studio are 11 60-inch TVs, plus one in each locker room. In addition to a variety of fitness equipment, Onelife also has three group fitness rooms for classes, such as strength training, cycling and Zumba; a small court for pickup basketball; and a 120-foot-long artificial turf training area.

Throughout the year, Onelife Fitness will host classes such as yoga on the green space rooftop, and it already has hosted three classes. One class had 144 attendees. Members can submit class ideas, and the fitness center is willing to try “goofy” things, such as a polar bear boot camp when it snows, said Bryan Bullock, general manager of the Kansas City location.

Onelife Fitness operates nine fitness centers in Virginia, and the Kansas City location will be the first to feature all LED lighting worth $120,000, Bullock said. Onelife Fitness aims to be eco-friendly, he said, which is why it emails receipts instead of using paper, doesn’t use paper towels and forgoes plastic and paper cups for its filtered water dispenser. Its ceiling fans are also low voltage and high velocity. In the fitness rooms, bamboo flooring is used because bamboo grows faster than other trees, he said.

“We’re just trying to be cognizant of our impact,” he said. “If we’re trying to promote good health and healthy living, it seems like a natural transition that we should also be promoting eco-friendly lifestyles.”

Onelife Fitness has hired 45 employees – including about 20 fitness instructors and seven personal trainers – and plans to hire more in the future as the fitness center grows, Bullock said. The fitness center will be open 24/7 and will close on only Christmas. The front desk will be manned 24/7, and every employee is certified in CPR and AED (automated external defibrillator).
